HOW TO MAKE A T SHIRT BAG
How to make a t shirt bag .We all have our favorite t-shirts or those shirts that we may have outgrown. Don’t just give away those t-shirts, use them. You can change shirts that even have tears or holes. Depending on where the crack or hole is will determine what you can do about it. If it has a large hole or tear in the main part of the shirt, I would recommend making it into a headband. If there is a hole or tear in the sleeve or a small one at the bottom edge or at the neckline, you can make it into a cute bag. I’m going to show you how to make a no-sew t-shirt bag. You can choose to create it with hanging tassels or an aerodynamic bag.
First, make sure the shirt is washed and dried. If it’s an old shirt this way you won’t have to wash it again. With a new shirt, you’ll want to wash and dry it so that if there is any shrinkage, it’s done before you cut it open. This will ensure that the final product is not finished when finished. You start by cutting off the sleeves. Depending on how long the straps are on the bag will determine how low you cut the sleeves. I traced the sleeve seam line about 1 inch from it.
Now you will need to cut out the neckline of the t-shirt. You can do this in different ways. For those who have been sewing or crafting with scissors for a while, you can probably do it by hand. I did this about 4 inches from the natural neckline of the t-shirt. If you’ve never done this before, you can use a large bowl or bucket and place it over the neckline a few inches away, then trace with a fabric pen or permanent marker. Then cut out the opening for the neck. Note that if you’ve reduced the sleeve necklines even further, you’ll want to reduce the neckline as well.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR MAKING A SHIRT BAG
- Wash and dry the T-shirt
- Cut off the sleeves – I cut off about 1 inch and traced the seam.
- Cut the neckline – I cut about 4 inches down from the natural neckline of the t-shirt.
- Cut off the bottom of the shirt – I cut about 1 inch strips. you are cutting the front and back of the shirt at the same time. Cut from edge to edge.
- Decide if you want your bag to have bottom tassels or not for your seamless t-shirt bag
- If you want the tassels to hang, skip this next step and do not turn the shirt inside out
- I wanted a bag with clean lines, so I turned the t-shirt inside out. Then place one wider edge strip over the knot you just made. You will now tie a second knot which will now attach the wider strip.
- Then start tying two strip knots opposite each other and work your way to the bottom of the shirt.
- Repeat step 8 for the last set of strips as well. IF you tied knots and have a wider opening for the strip, you can always just tie the 3rd knot with a folded over knot to seal the edge.
- Now turn the bag with the T-shirt right side out again. (You don’t have to turn the t-shirt bag inside out if you wanted tassels.)
- Enjoy your new no-sew t-shirt bag.
5 BEST WAYS TO MAKE A SHIRT BAG
How to make a t shirt bag there are many ways to make a t shirt bag or backpack. There are already tons of tutorials online on how to make a shopping bag out of a shirt.
- Basic Sewn T-Shirt Bag
Here’s Martha Stewart’s version, but there are many tutorials out there to make a basic bag directly onto a t-shirt. This is probably the most common method of making a shirt bag that you will find on the internet. It’s also probably the best way to turn a printed t-shirt into a bag if you really want to see the print, as the printed design remains on the “front” of the bag.
- Twist tank top bag:
Again, there are many tutorials all over the internet on how to make a tank top bag. The above link goes to one of my favorites. Instead of just stitching the bottom when the tank is open like in the first example, you turn the tank on its side and align the straps at the top. If you stitch the bottom, you have a much more “believable” bag. (By which I mean it no longer looks like a tank top stitched over the bottom and is actually much more attractive as a bag.
- Seamless t-shirt bag with fringe
For those who do not have a sewing machine or need to improvise a bag when there is no sewing machine, you can make this bag. When I first wrote this post, I still hadn’t tried to create one. The pictures online didn’t really do it justice to try so I wasn’t very motivated. I hadn’t thought of trying to make one using my bag flipping method to line up the sleeve openings and create a fringed hobo bottom bag.
- T-shirt bottom bag without string
If you don’t have a sewing machine, this is the fastest and easiest way to make a t-shirt in minutes! This bag uses the hem of a t-shirt to turn the bottom part into a drawstring.
All you have to do is make a slit through the top layer of the hem cover and pull the string through until you come out of the same hole. To close the bottom, pull the string as tight as possible and tie! That is all.
- Make a bag (or a beach bag.
A craft bag can be made from any other type of bag. The idea is to put a lot of slits in the bag to give it style. It will also allow the bag to stretch even more than normal.
Plastic produce bags have holes to allow the produce to breathe, but if you make a regular t-shirt bag, the cotton fabric is already breathable. Additionally, you are more likely to use the bag for temporary food transport than for permanent storage.
How to make a bag from a sleeve
How to make a t shirt bag .If you have to cut off your sleeves to make a bag, why not put them to great use and make a pouch out of them? This is a super quick and easy project because the sleeves have a lined bottom that can be used as a pre-made drawstring closure.
First, you want to turn your sleep upside down. You will then want to sew across the bottom. Whether or not you need to sew the sides depends on the type of sleeve you are using and whether you need to shape the sleeve to make a nicer sleeve. (For more details on this, see the Drawstring Bag Making post..
With this bag you don’t need the extra cord for the drawstring closure, but use the cord you sewed into the bottom seam of the bag. Turn the bag right side out and then cut slits into the top layer of the trim. Pull the string around the hem and let it come out of the same hole you started with. (If your bag has seams on both sides, you will need to make more slits to pull the drawstring seams through.
Leave enough string to open the bag easily, then tie the end to the string where the bag can be opened easily. You’re done. Now you can stuff the bag into the case and keep the extra cable as a handle for easy portability. When you are ready to use the bag, remove it from the bag and leave it in the bag while it is being used.
HOW TO MAKE A T SHIRT BAG IN A SHORT TIME
- Cut off the sleeves
If you would like to fold the t-shirt in half, you can cut both sleeves at once so that they are the same. Or, if your material is too thick to cut both at once, you can cut one, then fold it in half and use the cut side as a guide for the other sleeve.
- Cut out the neckline area
If you want, you can turn the shirt inside out and trace the outline of the bowl before cutting. I’ve used both methods and I personally like freehand cutting better as I prefer a slightly oval shape to a perfectly round one. Finally, I trimmed it a bit to make it more oval. If you haven’t turned your t-shirt inside out yet, do it now. Determine where the bottom of the bag should be and trace it. Keep in mind that depending on the fabric used your bag will likely stretch and elongate when full.
- Cut off the fringe
Now take your scissors and cut slits from the bottom of the shirt to the line marking the bottom of the bag. You will want to cut the front and back layers together as they need to match in the next step.
