5 BEST T SHIRT EMBROIDERY MACHINE MODELS

Brother PE800 embroidery machine

The Brother PE800 T Shirt Embroidery Machine is a great Brother machine designed only for embroidery. It has a maximum embroidery size of 5″x7”, which allows for most medium-sized designs with minimal splitting and rearranging. There is also a 5″x12″ replacement hoop that you can purchase as an extra.

The Brother PE800 embroidery machine comes with 138 built-in designs, although you’ll probably want to import your own designs to start making shirts. Also included are 11 fonts, 7 of which are English. These fonts come in small, medium, or large sizes; so again, you may want to have your own embroidery software for more customization.

Key properties

    • Design Resizing – Resize your design proportionally or disproportionately up to a maximum size of 5″x7″
    • Create a horizontal mirror image
    • Combine and rotate designs
    • Change thread colors and use color preview
    • Change the thread density
    • Add letters to the arc

Janome Memory Craft 400E embroidery machine

The Janome MC400E is an embroidery-only machine with a large maximum embroidery area of 7.9″ x 7.9″. This size is great for larger shirt designs. Compared to cheaper embroidery machines, this machine offers more but at a higher price. It has a maximum embroidery speed of 860 ppm, which means your designs will be completed faster.

Contains 160 built-in designs and 6 monogram fonts. Import additional patterns or fonts via USB. Basic design adjustments can also be made on the color touch screen. Features that will appeal to users looking for efficiency and ease of use include automatic jump stitch trimming, adjustable embroidery speed, adjustable hoop positioning, flexible stitch path and automatic thread breaking on the back post. The Baby Lock Flourish II and Brother NQ1600E are only embroidery machines VERY similar in all uses and functions, but are manufactured to Brother or Baby Lock standards. They are also often similar in price. Ways this machine is better than the Brother PE800 include a larger 6″x10″ embroidery area and automatic jump stitch trimming, which can be a big time saver.

There are also more built-in patterns (198 in total), as well as 140 pattern-frame combinations and 11 embroidery fonts. The maximum speed is 850 per minute. This machine is a big jump in price from the Brother PE800, but is popular with embroiderers who are looking for a larger frame size but don’t want to spend on a dream machine or multi-needle machine just yet.

Brother PRS100 single needle embroidery machine

For a free-arm embroidery machine for embroidering tubular items like cuffs and sleeves, as well as pockets and even small stockings, without moving the fabric, consider the Brother Persona PRS100 embroidery machine. This is a single needle embroidery machine, so you will need to change threads after each color. Maximum embroidery area is 8″x8″ square and contains 405 designs, 20 fonts and 6 alphabet designs. It also sews at a speed of up to 1,000 st./min. and completes projects much faster than many other embroidery machines.

Ever Sewn Sparrow X – A new generation sewing and embroidery machine

  • The Sparrow X sewing and embroidery machine is manufactured by Ever Sewn, a company that prides itself on technologically advanced sewing and embroidery machines. Hence the name “next generation”.
  • As an advanced machine (for its price), the Sparrow X does away with importing designs via USB and instead uses their free Ever Sewn Pro app.
  • With the app, you can edit and transfer designs using any wireless device. Instead of making small adjustments on the small screen of the embroidery machine, you make adjustments on the larger screen of your computer or tablet.

T-shirt embroidery machine tips

Embroidering t-shirts is relatively easy, quick, fun, and a great way to customize an outfit. First, choose where you want your embroidery design to be placed. Mark the center of the pattern on the shirt. I usually do this with either a water-soluble fabric marker or a chalk wheel. If you’re not sure where you want to place the design, print a design template from your embroidery software and line it up where you want it. Then mark the spot.

You can also check out this embroidery placement guide for traditional recommendations. Then turn the shirt inside out and glue the stabilizer of your choice to the back of the shirt you want to embroider. I used Odif 505 to adhere one layer of PolyMesh Stabilizer. I considered using a second layer due to the density of my design, but I was lucky with just one layer. The stabilizer must be at least an inch larger than your hoop size on each side. If you use fusible stabilizer, iron it on instead of spraying it.

Double check that you are using the correct color of bobbin thread, the correct embroidery needle and the correct type of embroidery thread. At this point, if the unrolled parts of the shirt will interfere with your embroidery area, make sure the shirt is unhemmed. I like to use pins, clothespins or masking tape to prevent accidentally sewing on the wrong parts of the shirt! Just make sure your clips don’t hit the machine head once it starts sewing

CHOOSING THE BEST STABILIZER FOR YOUR T-SHIRT EMBROIDERY MACHINE

  • The stretchy t-shirt fabric needs a stabilizer to, for lack of a better word, stabilize it during embroidery. As such, choose either a clipped stabilizer or a mesh stabilizer that is not displayed. The beauty of no-show mesh (also referred to as PolyMesh) is that it is light and soft and will be less visible through the front of white shirts.
  • Since shirts are flexible knits, they need to be well stabilized during the embroidery process. As such, use a cut stabilizer. This type of transparent stabilizer will not show through on the front of light colored t-shirts. (If you have a dense pattern, you may need more than one layer.) Once you’re done embroidering, cut off the stabilizer near the edge of the pattern and leave it on the back of the shirt.
  • While you may occasionally have success with a tearaway stabilizer, it is not the best choice. Especially with dense designs, the tearaway stabilizer just won’t hold your designs well. If you go to tear off the residual stabilizer, you also risk pulling or stretching the stitching on the shirt.
  • This helps prevent the stitches from digging into the fabric. For example, when embroidering towels or fleece blankets, you will be lost without a water-dilatable dressing! Once you have finished machine sewing the shirt, just dip the shirt in water to remove the top layer.

MACHINE THREADS AND NEEDLES FOR T-SHIRT EMBROIDERY

Also, you cannot embroider with the same cotton thread that you use for sewing. Polyester and rayon are your best choices. It is affordable and works great with my Brother and Janome embroidery machines that I work on in the library. For most projects where you can’t see the back, it’s a good idea to use white thread for everything. Save time by not threading the bobbin and upper thread every time you change the thread.

Also, make sure you choose the appropriate embroidery machine needle that matches your type of fabric. Using one size needle may not give you the best stitches on some fabrics. While in many cases you will benefit more from a ballpoint needle for knits, you may have better luck with a universal needle if you are using an overlay. Just don’t rule out the needle as a possible culprit when troubleshooting shirt embroidery.

The selection of threads will tempt you. Here is a list of threads to choose from: Rayon, Poly Emb, Color Twist, Cotton, Heavy Cotton, Heavy Nylon, Glitter, Crochet, Bobbin, Bobbin, Invisible Thread, Wool Nylon, Multicolor Polyester, Metallic, Sewing Threads and much more, much more. Not only that, there are many other needlework supplies that you can buy online.

CONCLUSION

These shirt embroidery machine reviews provided a starting point for choosing the best garment embroidery machine. Fabric weight is also an important consideration and the right choice will result in an embroidered t-shirt suitable for the workplace, comfortable for the wearer and durable enough to offer real value for money to the company. However, embroidery on a T-shirt requires special attention. Pique knit (the most common t-shirt knit) can be difficult to embroider with fine patterns because the open “holes” in the fabric cause the pattern to pull out of shape.
